Famous narrations re. Ramadan BUT…

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Wassalaatu Wassalaam ‘ala Rasoolillah

All praises are due to Allah who has permitted us to enter into another Ramadan –  a month of opportunity, a month of Barakah and a month that exemplifies the immeasurable mercy of Allah towards his creation. Indeed, we ought to be grateful to Allah to gift us such a blessed month…Alhamdulillah 🙂 . As part of preparing for the advent of Ramadan; many (admirably) read up on the virtues of such a month in order to raise their eemaan so, they could engage in acts of worship to gain closeness to Allah. However, not all ahadeeth can be attributed to the prophet SAW as many are weak, very weak or even fabricated. Ergo, the title of this article…famous narrations re. Ramadan BUT, they are inauthentic. The following are some of the narrations that are not authentic:

  1. “Fast and you will be healthy.”

Despite, the meaning of this hadeeth to be correct (as proven by Science) – it is not authentically attributed to the prophet SAW. Hafidh Al-‘Iraqi (from the giants of the scholars of Hadeeth) has weakened it, so has Al-Munaawi, Al-‘Aqeeli and Albani. Others such as As-Saaghaani, Alfatani and Ash-Shawkani have classed this narration to be fabricated.

  2. “The first 10 days of Ramadan are (days of) Mercy, Its middle (10 days) are (days of) Forgiveness and its last (10 days) are liberation from the hell-fire”

Imam Al-‘Aqeeli mentioned in “Ad-Du’afaa Al-Kabeer” that this narration has no basis. Imam Albani in Sahih Al-Jami’ stated that this is a very weak  narration. Sheikh Abu Ishaaq Al-Huwainy said regarding this hadeeth – it is baatil.

The reality is that all of Ramadan is mercy, forgiveness and a chance to be liberated from the hell-fire. This is derived from the following hadeeth  authenticated by Sheikh Albani:

“When the first night of the month of Ramadan comes, the devils and rebellious jinn are chained up and the gates of Hell are closed, and not one gate of it is opened. The gates of Paradise are opened and not one gate of it is closed. And a caller cries out: ‘O seeker of good, proceed; O seeker of evil, desist.  And Allah has those whom He frees from the Fire, and that happens every night.” (Ibn Majah)

  3.  “Indeed, Allah ‘Azza Wa Jal frees 600,000 from the hell fire in every night of Ramadan and during its       concluding night, he frees an amount equivalent to the total he freed in the preceding nights”

Imam Bayhaqi had said that this hadeeth is Mursal (not raised to the prophet) and therefore, this is weak. Ibn Hibban stated that this hadeeth has no basis and Imam Albani had also weakened this narration.

However, it is correct that Allah does indeed free his servants from the fire of hell during the month of Ramadan. However, none, but he knows the exact number he frees. This is derived from the following authentic hadeeth reported in the previous paragraph.

  4. “When it is the first night of the month of Ramadhan, Allah, The Mighty and The Majestic, looks at his creation. And when Allah, The Mighty and The Majestic, looks at His slave, never will He punish Him. And Allah, The Mighty and The Majestic frees a million (people) from the fire every night. And when it is the 29th night, Allah frees from the fire an amount that is similar to the amount he freed in the entire month”

This a fabricated narration as affirmed by Ibn-l Jawzi in his work “Al-Mawdoo’aat”. It has also been categorised as fabricated by Imam Ash-Shawkani (in Al-Fawaid Al-Majmoo’ah) and by Imam Albani (in Da’eef At-Targheeb and As-silsalatu Ad-Da’eefah).

The same can be mentioned as that was mentioned for narration number 3) – Allah frees his servants from the fire in the month of Ramadan but, none knows the number of those who are liberated except, he (subhanahu wa ta’ala).

5) “Indeed, Paradise is beautified for Ramadan at the beginning of the year until, the next year. When the first night of Ramadan appears, a wind blows from underneath the Throne (of Allah)…….Allah ‘Azza Wa Jal frees 1 million of his servants, of whom were earmarked for the hellfire, from the hell-fire every day. When the concluding night of Ramadan appears – Allah frees from the fire an amount equivalent to the amount he had freed in the month from beginning to end”.

Ibn-l Jawzi (in Al-‘Ilal Al-Mutanaahiyah) said regarding this hadeeth “It is not authentic” and Imam Albani classed this as fabricated in Da’eef At-Targheeb.

6) “If the servants of what lies therein in Ramadan, they would have wished that the entire year was Ramadan!. A man from Khuza’ah said “Narrate to us regarding it”. He said “Indeed, Paradise is beautified for Ramadhan at the beginning of the year until the (next) year. So, when it is the first night of Ramadhan, a wind blows from underneath the Throne (of Allah) and it decant some of the leaves of  Jannah. The Hoor Al-Ayn look at this and say : ‘O’ Lord, grant us from your servants spouses that will be the coolness of our eyes and we will be the coolness of their eyes’. He then said “There is no servant who fasts in Ramadan except, that he is wedded to a spouse amongst the Hoor Al-‘Ayn in a pavilion made out of hollow pearls. That is what Allah had described when he stated “Fair ones reserved in Pavilions (Ar-Rahman verse 72)”…..”

Ibn-l Jawzi classified this hadeeth as fabricated. Al-Hafidh Ibn Hajr Al-‘Athqalani in Al-Mutaalib Al-‘Aaliyah stated that his hadeeth is very weak.. Imam  Ash-Shawkani in Fawaid Al-Majmoo’ah stated that this is fabricated. Imam Albani also had stated that this narration was fabricated.

7) “O people a very great month has come upon you …whoever seeks nearness to Him with a good deed in it will be like performing an obligatory action in other months and whoever performs an obligatory action then it will be like as if he has performed 70 obligatory actions in other months”

Ibn Hajr Al-‘Athqalani stated that this hadeeth is weak. Imam Albani stated that this narration was very weak (in his takhreej of Mishkaat Al-Masaabeeh) and in As-Silsalatu Ad-Da’eefah stated that this was Munkar (denounced).

However, just because this hadeeth is rejected – it does not mean that deeds are not multiplied (in terms of reward) in Ramadan. Rather, Allah multiplies good deeds in Ramadan and other than Ramadan upto 700 times. The reward for fasting is something unique and only Allah knows the reward of it and how much he will increase the reward by. This stems from the following authentic narration:

“Abu Hureirah RA stated that the prophet SAW said: “Every deed of the child of Adam will be multiplied between ten and seven hundred times. Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, said: Except fasting. It is for Me and I shall reward for it. He gives up his desires and his food for My sake.”

8) “The month of Ramadan is my nations month; which casts away their sins. When a muslim servant fasts and refrains from lying, backbiting and breaks his fast with pure (substance/nourishment)  – he leaves his sins (i.e. sins are erased) the way a snake leaves its skin”

Imam Albani categorised this hadeeth as “very weak”. However, it is worth stating that there are authentic narrations that allude to Ramadan expiating for ones sins/errors. Abu Hureirah reports that the prophet SAW said

“Whosoever fasts Ramadan with eemaan and in anticipation of its reward – his past sins will be forgiven” (Bukhari & Muslim).

Also, Abu Hureirah RA narrates that the prophet SAW said

“The 5 daily prayers, One Jumu’ah to the next Jum’uah & Ramadan to the next Ramadan expiate sins which were committed in between so long as one refrains from the major sins” (Muslim).

Qiyam Al-Layl: The Tranquillity of the Believer (2)

Bismillah Walhamdulillah Was-salaatu Was-salaam ‘alaa Rasoolillah

Some of the gems from the Qur’an and Sunnah regarding Qiyam Al-Layl are as follows:

Allah says regarding those who engage in the night prayer:

تَتَجَافَىٰ جُنُوبُهُمْ عَنِ الْمَضَاجِعِ يَدْعُونَ رَبَّهُمْ خَوْفًا وَطَمَعًا وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ

They arise from [their] beds; they supplicate their Lord in fear and aspiration, and from what We have provided them, they spend. (Surat Al-Sajdah Verse 16)

Thereafter, the end-result of this action is mentioned:

فَلَا تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَّا أُخْفِيَ لَهُم مِّن قُرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ

And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do. (Surat Al-Sajdah Verse 17)
Allah says in his description of the Muhsineen (Good-doers):

كَانُوا قَلِيلًا مِّنَ اللَّيْلِ مَا يَهْجَعُونَ ﴿١٧ وَبِالْأَسْحَارِ هُمْ يَسْتَغْفِرُونَ

They used to sleep but little of the night, And in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness, (Surat Adh-Dhariyat Verses 17-18).
It has been transmitted from Qatadah, Mujahid and others that the meaning of the above verse is that they did not used to sleep in the night until, the morning. Ibn ‘Abbas RA said that the meaning meant that no night preceded them except, they took a portion from it (i.e. spent a portion of it in prayer).
Allah also says:

Is one who is devoutly obedient during periods of the night, prostrating and standing [in prayer], fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the mercy of his Lord, [like one who does not]? (Surat Az-Zumar Verse 9)

Sheikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said that the meaning of Al-Qunoot (noun: devoutly):

Persistent in worship; when in prayer – he lengthens his standing in it, his bowing in it or his prostrating in it. This is the one who is devout (Qaanit)

Allah says in his description of the qualities possessed by the slaves of Ar-Rahmaan:

وَالَّذِينَ يَبِيتُونَ لِرَبِّهِمْ سُجَّدًا وَقِيَامًا

And those who spend [part of] the night to their Lord prostrating and standing [in prayer] (Surat Al-Furqan Verse 64)

Al-Bukhari mentions the following hadeeth in his chapter entitled “Chapter on the virtues of Qiyam Al-Layl”:

Narrated Ibn `Umar (RA):

If a man saw a dream during the lifetime of the Prophet (SAW) he would narrate it to the Prophet. Once I wished to see a dream and narrate it to the Prophet I was young, unmarried, and used to sleep in the Mosque during the lifetime of the Prophet. I dreamt that two angels took me and went away with me towards the (Hell) Fire which looked like a well with the inside walls built up, and had two side-walls like those of a well. There I saw some people in it whom I knew. I started saying: “I seek Refuge with Allah from the (Hell) Fire, I seek Refuge with Allah from the (Hell) Fire.” Then another angel met the other two and said to me: “Do not be afraid.”

I narrated my dream to Hafsa (RA) who, in her turn, narrated it to the Prophet (SAW). He said: “What an excellent man ‘Abdullah is…if he only observes the night prayer.”

Salem (a sub-narrator) said:

“Abdullah used not to sleep at night but very little hence forward.”

It can be seen from the statement: “What an excellent man ‘Abdullah is..” that the compliance with prayer during the night fits the description of “an excellent man”. Another benefit that can be derived from the aforementioned hadeeth is that the engagement in Qiyam Al-Layl (night prayer) repels the punishment of Allah.

In the hadeeth of Abu Hureirah RA it mentions the prophet SAW said: “The best of prayers after the prescribed obligatory prayers is Qiyam Al-Layl” (Muslim).

Also, ‘Ali Bin Abi Talib RA informed that “the prophet SAW entered upon me and Fatima RA (The prophet’s daughter) one night and said “Won’t you two pray?”. I replied “Oh messenger of Allah, our lives are in the hands of Allah, if he want us to get up, he will make us get up”. The prophet SAW went away without saying anything and thereafter, I heard him saying whilst, hitting his thigh: –

“…But, man is ever more quarrelsome than anything.” (Surat Al-Kahf Verse 54). [Bukhari]
Ibn Battaal said: In this narration, the virtues of Qiyam Al-Layl are mentioned in addition to awakening ones family and kindred from sleep (for prayer).
At-Tabari said: If the prophet SAW did not know of the magnitude of the virtues of prayer during the night, he would not bother his daughter (Fatima) and the son of his uncle (Ali Bin Abi Talib) during a period in which Allah has created “rest” for his creation. But, he opted to allow them to achieve/realise that virtue.
May Allah make us from amongst the night vigils….Aameen

Qiyam Al-Layl: The Tranquillity of the Believer

As we journey through the toils of this life; we often find that we are in a place whereby our limbs become fatigued and our mental state becomes plagued with an innate desire to be in a state of tranquillity and calmness. Consequently, our behaviour and conduct becomes robotic; no longer do we find that happiness or joy that we once knew. Our life becomes bland and we crave to experience jubilation, delight and exuberance from merely living life. These emotions are indispensable to us as they can immediately exile a person from the darkness of sluggishness into the radiance of life. Such powerful emotions are an invaluable source of nourishment for our souls and this manifests into a communal cultivation land whereby, others benefit from the positivity that surrounds us.

As Muslims we must realise that this compelling sense of tranquillity is only achieved by attaining nearness to Allah – The supreme and mighty. One of the most rewarding ways to achieve this great feat is by traversing through the night via Qiyaam Al-Layl (The night prayer). The night prayer (Tahajjud/Qiyam Al-Layl) is a source of relaxation and comfort for the believer. As the believer awakens at night, whilst, mankind remains oblivious to his footsteps – he retreats to a period of seclusion and spends his night bowing, prostrating and invoking the one whom perpetuation of praise is rightfully due upon – Allah SWT. Such a relationship is one to be envious of for indeed, Qiyaam Al-Layl is a sign of a person whom Allah loves as he has given him the ability to forsake his soft bed to engage in a journey that takes him to a different realm – the realm of the hereafter.

The Mutahajjid (One who engages in Qiyam Al-Layl) calls out to his lord in the depths of the night whilst, acknowledging the potency and efficacy of supplications made at this preponderant time. He bears his heart out to his master whilst, knowing with certainty that his merciful lord hears his every whisper. It is this conviction that penetrates his heart that allows him to feel at ease and in comfort. He finds joy in praising Allah and in glorifying and thanking him. No longer does he feel the stresses and turmoil of his worldly affairs. No longer does he feel his heart narrowing by being worn down with the horridness that confronts him every day. He now experiences richness in his heart as he knows he has a loving lord who sustains and provides for him. This richness that encapsulates his heart gives him the strength and perseverance to achieve the unexpected. It empowers him with a sense of purpose and he finds himself being released from the chains of depression that used to shackle him. He realises that Qiyaam Al-Layl enriches his soul with a sweetness that brings internal elation and melts down the most bitter of attacks the world throws at him.

Qiyam Al-Layl is a form of ammunition which empowers the Muslim. He experiences a closeness to Allah that he never experienced before. He tastes the sweetness of worship and becomes enticed by it to the extent whereby, missing it becomes a source of misery for him. Thus, the pious predecessors used to make up Qiyam Al-Layl in the day if they did not partake in it during the night. Such concern for a supererogatory action only increases its importance and effectiveness in the life of the believer.

We ask Allah to make us from those who experience the tranquillity of the night in which the heart finds delightOh Allah make us amongst your special ones who are persistent in the performance of the night prayer….Aameen

As-Salah As-Salah As-Salah

All praises and thanks are due to Allah for his excellence, perfection and his favours that essentiate appreciation towards him. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except him, he has no partners and he is deserving of utmost reverance due to his prestige. And I testify that Muhammad (SAW) is his servant and messenger – a caller towards his pleasure. Oh Allah, bestow blessings and peace upon him, his family, companions and brothers in faith.

Oh Servants of Allah! I advise you and myself to fear Allah and to “fear the day you shall be returned to him” (2:281). Know, that from the characteristics and features of the Muttaqeen (those who possess piety/god-consciousness/fear of Allah) is that they preserve and uphold their prayers.

How can you confront and face the volatile nature of this world except, through joining and standing firm in the rows in Prayer? Allah says:

Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; Irritable (discontented) when evil touches him; And niggardly when good touches him;” (Surat Al-Ma’arij Verses 19 – 21)

Who is the exception to this? (Allah says) –

“Except, those who are devoted to prayers” (Al-Ma’arij Verse 22)

Who are these individuals who are devoted to the prayers? Are they those who do not pray except, the weekly Jumu’ah? Or are they those who offer only 2 prayers daily? Are they those who offer the before or after its timing? The answer lies in his words:

 الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَلَى صَلاتِهِمْ دَائِمُونَ،

“Those who are constant in their prayer” (Al-Ma’arij Verse 23)

Thereafter, the fruits of their prayers is mentioned and the mannerisms and Khashya (divine fear) that emanates in their lives due to their mentality they possess and their affection to the prayer: –

Fear

“And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord – Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe –“ (Al-Ma’arij Verses 27 – 28).

Where does this fear come from? It comes from the preservation of one’s Salah.

Mannerisms

“And those who keep their trusts and covenants;” (Al-Ma’arij Verse 32)

How can they fulfil their trusts and establish the rights that are binding (upon them) except, through the preservation of the prayers?

And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). Except with their wives and the (women slaves and captives) whom their right hands possess, for (then) they are not to be blamed,” (Al-Ma’arij Verses 29 – 30)

How can they guard their chastity and lower their gaze unless, they are amongst those who are constant in their Salah?

Thus, when persistence and preservation (of the prayer) come together – listen, to the end-result, BarakAllahu feek..

“Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured.” (Al-Ma’arij Verse 35)

By Allah! You will never attain nearness to Allah through an act that is greater than preserving the prayers!

Anas reports: We were sitting before the prophet SAW when a man whom we did not recognise entered upon us. He said “Where is the descendant of ‘Abdil Mutalib? We said “He is the white individual there”. So, he went to him and said “Oh descendant of Abdil Mutalib, I am an enquirer with questions for you”. He was reclining and then sat up. The questioner asked “Oh Muhammad! Who has raised the heavens?”. He replied “Allah”. The questioner asked “Oh Muhammad, who has spread out the earth?”. He replied “Allah”. The questioner asked “And who has erected the mountains?”. He replied “Allah”. Thereafter, the questioner asked “I ask you, by the one who has raised the heavens, spread out the earth and erected the mountains, did Allah send you as a messenger to us?”. The prophets face turned red and he replied “Yes”. The questioner then asked “I ask you by the one who has raised the heavens, spread out the earth, erected the mountains and sent you as a messenger to us, did Allah command you to order us with the performance of 5 daily prayers through the night and day? He replied “Yes”. He asked “Did Allah command you to order us with fasting?”. He replied “Yes”. He then asked “Did Allah command you to order us to fulfil the obligation of Zakah? (on those whom it is waajib upon)”. He replied “Yes”. He asked “Did Allah command you to order us with Hajj?”. He replied “Yes”. The questioner asked “By the one who raised the heavens, spread out the earth, erected the mountains and sent you as a messenger to us, those who preserve their prayers, fast during Ramadan, pay Zakah, perform the pilgrimage and not increase upon that…..then he went and the prophet SAW said “If a person is truthful (upon that which has been mentioned), he shall enter Jannah”. Meaning that if a person preserves his prayer, fasts during Ramadan, pays Zakah and makes the pilgrimage to the Haram – he will enter Jannah.

Contemplate, May Allah bless you! The obligation of Zakah is lifted when you have no wealth, the obligation of fasting is dropped when you have a valid excuse (Al-Baqarah v.184) and Hajj is only obligatory for the one who has the means to accomplish it – However, can anyone say to me that you are excused from the obligation of prayer in any circumstance (without a legislated concession i.e. A woman on her cycle), especially, when the one who safeguards his Salah shall enter Jannah?

For it comes in the hadeeth, that the prophet SAW said “It is a right upon Allah that he will admit into Jannah the one who who meets Allah whilst, having safeguarded his prayer. Abu Dhar said “..Even if he was to commit fornication and steal? The prophet replied “Even if he was to commit fornication and steal. Abu Dhar repeated “Oh messenger of Allah, even if he was to commit fornication and steal? The prophet replied “Even if he was to commit fornication and steal. Abu Dhar re-iterated this 3 times (all together) to which the prophet replied “Even in defiance of Abu Dhar”.

5 daily prayers – the one who performs them when they hear the call (of Adhan) – it will be a source of illumination, radiance and proof for him on the day of Qiyamah. And whoever neglects them; then he has no one to blame except himself!

Adapted from the speech of Sheikh Khalid Rashid – Hafidhahullah

Welcome, Oh Ramadan (1)

All praises are due to Allah, who has blessed his creation with innumerable bounties and has placed them on a great platform to achieve success; both in this world and the hereafter. We thank him and we seek his aid & forgiveness. None has the right to be worshipped except he, and may peace and blessings of Allah be upon his final messenger – Muhammad, the son of ‘Abdullah, Salawaatullaahi wa Salaamuhu ‘Alaih.

Allah has signified this noble month over other months with many special qualities and virtues.

Upon is you, my dear respected brother/sister in Islam, is to contemplate over the following qualities/virtues:

  • The changing of the smell of a fasting individuals mouth is more purer to Allah than the fragrance of musk
  • The Angels seek forgiveness for those who fast until, he breaks it (Iftar time)
  • Allah adorns Jannah every day throughout this month and says to it ‘’ “The time is near when My pious servants shall be freed from difficulties and (meager) provisions, and they will come to You’’
  • The Shayateen are chained up
  • The gates of Jannah are flung open and the gates of Jahannum are closed
  • In it lies Laylat Al-Qadr; which is better than a 1000 months. Whoever is deprived from it is deprived from a lot.
  • Allah redeems people from the hell-fire and that is everyday in Ramadan

Dear respected brother/sister,

How does a month with all these qualities and virtues become non-beneficial? …. It is through engaging in vain activities and being the worse for wear by not making the most out of the nights. In addition, it is through a lack of enthusiasm for the advent of the month which causes it to become something heavy upon us…..We seek refuge in Allah from all those reasons.

However, the righteous servant meets this month with sincere repentence, a truthful resolve to seize the opportunities it offers , to take advantage of the time by employing righteous actions and asking Allah to assist in his ‘Ibadah

The Lofty Status Of The Book of Allaah –

If We had sent down this Qur’an upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.

Ibn Katheer RHM mentions in his tafseer, his explanation of this verse that If this is the case with a mountain which is hard and huge, that if it was made able to comprehend and understand this Qur’an, will feel humble and crumble from fear of Allaah the Exalted, then what about you — O mankind Why do your hearts not feel softness and humbleness from the fear of Allaah, even though you understand Allaah’s command and comprehend His Book.

Do we not know, the virtues of the verses of the Qur’aan? Let the Muslim know, that Allaah ta’ala will preserve the Muslim because of his relationship with the Qur’aan. For the believer, he draws near to Allaah, knowing that he is NOT reciting just ordinary words, rather, he is reciting the words of Allaah Jallaahu ‘ala – his creator. Let the believer know, that he is enjoining upon an action that was the habit of the righteous predecessors – those who are the jewels of the great nation.

On the authority of ‘Uqbah Ibn ‘Aamir RA who said that the the prophet Sallallaahu ‘alaihi Wassalam came out of the masjid and he said to the people: Does any of you love that he wakes up every day and goes to But-haan or Al-‘Aqeeq and he attains 2 fat camels without committing any sin nor cut off any ties of relation? So, we said ‘Oh Messenger of Allaah, we surely would like that! So, the prophet Sallallaahu ‘alaihi Wassalam said: ”Will not any of you go to the masjid and learn, or read 2 verses from the book of Allaah ‘Azza wa Jal. For that is better than 2 she-camels, and 3 verses are better than 3 camels and 4 verses are better than 4 camels. And the number of verses read in total are better than the same number of camels’‘. (Muslim and Abu Dawood)
